A beautiful evening last night, about 7.30 pm over Manchester at 37000′. We could see the sun setting due west (just past the autumn equinox), with the whole of the welsh coastline and snowdonia.. and could even make out the hint of the Irish coastline in the distance.
And over in the east the curtain of night was rising as the earth’s shadow became more visible and started to draw up and over us. In this photo the line of deep blue is the earths shadow between a thin layer of cloud and the sky still touched by the sun.
The sun did not give up easily last night, as you can see in this last photo, the shadow area covering almost all the sky.
