VENUS OF WILLENDORF

willendorfawho knows who made this small sculpture which is (as far as I can work out) the oldest known.  She is carved with great delicacy out of stone and found in a porous limestone area, so had been transported. Anthropologists debate her significance, but she was probably some sort of fertility talisman, given her rotundity and the emphasis on her breasts, round figure and emphasised pubic area.  The last attempt at dating the age of the Venus came up with 30,000 to 25,000 BCE.
