I have to give a presentation on Gerhard Richter, to whom I do not feel particularly drawn.  Given his suspicions about how art can be used for propaganda purposes, as he experienced as a young man in East Germany, he has been determined not to give away much information about his thoughts and to tightly control how his work is categorised.
Richter has been described as a nihilist thanks to his statements with regard to his art such as:”I know nothing, can do nothing, understand nothing, know nothing, nothing”. I don’t find this terrribly cheerful.. According to Matt, Nihilists are a bit like depressed Buddhists.. I am not encouraged.
However, I have been experimenting with trying out some of his ideas combining photography and painting, trying to loosen up and be more daring.
This a painting Richter did in 2000 from a photograph he took in Florence
